Sure, you loved that shampoo and conditioner you bought when you decided to experiment with being a blonde. But now that your hair is back to your natural shade, is that old combo in your shower still good?
The shelf life of most shampoos and conditioners is usually around 3 years unopened and 18 months once opened. If you're using a natural product, the shelf life is even less. Natural shampoos and conditioners are a little more sensitive. They don't contain additives and preservatives that typical shampoos and conditioners do.
Typically, if your shampoo and conditioner has an expiration date, the expiration symbol will be located near the product's base. It's shown in the form of a little jar with numbers inside such as 18. This means you have 18 months before it expires. If you can't find one don't worry, you're not crazy. The FDA doesn't require one on shampoos and conditioners, so most won't have one listed.
It's probably time to toss your shampoo and conditioner
if you notice a change in color or smell. Also, expired products can start to clump or separate. Part ways and
try something new!

If you're like most people, you probably have a bottle of sunscreen somewhere in your bathroom and sitting at the bottom of last summer's beach bag. So you might be asking yourself, does it actually expire?
Most sunscreens are designed to remain at original strength for up to 3 years. But, experts suggest replacing your sunscreen every year. And let's be honest, if you're using it like you should it shouldn't last that long.
FDA regulations require all sunscreens to have an expiration date unless stability testing conducted by the manufacturer has shown that the product will remain stable for at least three years. If there isn't an expiration date, err on the side of caution and replace your sunscreen every year. We're talking about your skin here, keep it safe!
If your sunscreen doesn't look, smell or feel the way it did when you first used it, replace it. These changes could mean the active ingredients are no longer active. We wouldn't want you walking around with a false sense of protection from the sun and getting a nasty sunburn. Better safe than sorry!

When it comes to mascara, you don't want to mess around. We're talking about your eyeballs here! When you take the brush out and back in, you're bringing any bacteria it's exposed to with it... along with a chance of pinkeye. Not a good color on you.
Unopened, mascara is good for around 6 months. But here's an important fact: the use-by date on your makeup products relies on the first day you use them, not the purchase date.
Once opened, replace your mascara every 2-3 months. No ifs, ands or buts. To extend the life of your mascara, make sure to tightly close the tube when you're done. Also, avoid pumping the mascara wand excessively.
This will help keep air and germs getting in to a minimum.
If your mascara starts to smell funny and its texture starts to change and become clumpy, it's time to say goodbye. Makeup pro tip: next time you're mascara shopping, buy two. This way you always have a back-up (and no excuses).
There are few beauty products more amazing than a good face mask. Designed to target a specific concern and whip your skin back into shape in no time! But, because you don't use them on a daily basis they have a tendency to sit around your bathroom a little longer than they probably should.
Unopened, your face masks are usually good for 1-2 years. Remember storage is always key when it comes to beauty products. Products stored in a cool, dry, darker place will holdup better than products left on your window seal, or in your steamy shower.
After opening, its recommend to toss your unused tubes and jars after 6-12 months. Cream or gel based masks tend to last longer. Clay masks tend to dry out quicker so you might want to toss out after 6 months. Always look for the jar symbol on the back of your products. You might squeeze a little more life out of them.
With masks, its natural for some separation to occur. Over time, the ingredients and chemicals will begin to break down and that may lead to skin irritation. If this happens, toss it. If your mask changes in smell or major consistency, toss it. When in doubt, throw it out!

You wouldn't even dream of spreading expired cream cheese on your bagel. So why would you think about using expired moisturizer on your face? Well, you wouldn't. Ew.
In general, unopened moisturizer is good for 1-2 years. Storing your trusty sidekick in a cool, dry place will help keep it in its prime and ready to perform miracles once you open it.
If there isn't a jar symbol on the back of your product to help with the guesswork, here's a good rule of thumb: a good moisturizer will typically last 6 months to 1 year once opened. However, if you're using it on a regular basis, odds are you'll need to replenish it before it expires.
Expired moisturizer doesn't just loose its effectiveness
it can cause irritation and possible bacterial infection. Moisturizers that come in a jar are more likely to pick-up bacteria between uses while those in a pump are less susceptible. Always be safe and toss a product if you notice a change in smell, color or consistency.

Have you looked at your nail polish collection lately? With new colors coming out all the time, chances are things have gotten a little out of hand. In the spirit of the new year, it's high time for some decluttering.
Canned corn, Spam, nail polish. Unopened, these items will last forever on a shelf. You will most likely change your "future favorite color" ten times before your "now favorite color" expires.
Once you open that fresh bottle of polish, you have about 1-2 years before it's time to retire. When you've finished your mani, make sure to seal the bottle really tight. This will help keep important ingredients from evaporating.
We've all experienced what happens when polish starts to push past prime. It will start to thicken and separate, making those even strokes impossible. Try adding a thinning agent, or better yet, find a new color!
